the guinea pig does not drink water

When you first get your guinea pig, and maybe in a few weeks or months, you may notice that your pet never drinks water.

The drinking bowls remain full, the saucers of water serve as toilets, and yet the guinea pig looks healthy and happy. What’s happening?

It turned out that guinea pigs, fed a diet rich in liquid vegetables (especially celery and cucumber), often do not need additional water. They seem to be able to get all the fluids they need from eating vegetables. That is why it is so important to feed fluffy animals with fresh vegetables every day.

Pellets and hay are also an important part of the cute rodent menu, but fresh, nutritious and full of water vegetables are really essential to guinea pig health.

Wondering if that means guinea pigs don’t need water? The answer is simple – all mammals, including these rodents, need water. Even if you don’t drink it, you should change the liquid in your drinker or saucer every day.

Guinea pig

You never know when their thirst will overwhelm them. Like all animals guinea pigs you should always have fresh, clean drinking water.

If your guinea pig looks sick and apathetic (meaning it doesn’t move much), it’s a sign that something is wrong. A sick guinea pig will not be energetic, its fur may become rough, its eyes may be closed all the time, and it may not react to the things it usually responds to. If you do find your guinea pig in this condition, a visit to the vet is a must.

If yours the guinea pig does not eat or drinkit is also a sign of a more serious condition. For guinea pigs, eating vegetables is much more important to their health than drinking water from a bowl or a drinker. If your guinea pig has stopped eating, you should definitely take it to the vet.
