What guinea pigs eat

What do guinea pigs eat? Born vegans

We can say that guinea pigs are born vegans, and it will not be a provocative statement. Guinea Pig does not consume dairy products and proteins, as they do not tolerate them, so they should definitely be avoided in their menu. The basis of the diet of guinea pigs, as in the case of rabbits, is hay – the animal should have constant access to it. Guinea pigs have a very specific digestive system. It is relatively long, so the eaten food is digested only when it is “pushed” through its consecutive portions. For this reason, we can sometimes get the impression that our pet is constantly chewing on the hay. However, the guinea pig needs to do this in order to keep the digestive system in good shape. In addition, hay also allows the mumps to wear away his growing teeth.

The perfect hay for a caviar should not be too dry – it can cause dust, which can irritate the delicate nostril of a rodent. It is recommended that the hay be green and fragrant. They should be changed on a regular basis to avoid the guinea eating contaminated food. It is worth enriching the daily portion of hay with ready-made herbal mixtures that you can find in our online store.

The presence of foods rich in vitamin C plays a very important role in the guinea pig menu. The deficiency of this vitamin is dangerous to the health of the rodent. It can cause diarrhea, skin disease, tooth loss and even death.

Fortunately, foods rich in vitamin C are very common. Among the vegetables that will help us provide our rodents with this vitamin, we can mention: tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, red and green peppers, spinach, broccoli, and beetroot. Fruits rich in vitamin C that we can give the guinea pig are, for example, strawberries, oranges and cherries. The above-mentioned fruits and vegetables should be given to cavia at least once a day.

Speaking of vegetables and fruits, of course, we do not have to limit ourselves only to those rich in vitamin C.. Our pet will surely eat juicy carrots, cucumbers or corn with taste. For fruits – watermelon, apple, kiwi, blueberries. When giving a rodent a fruit or vegetable unknown to him so far, start with small amounts and observe the animal’s behavior. It may turn out that our piggy will be allergic to a given plant.

Before serving, fruit and vegetables should be washed under running water, because they may have been sprayed with various preparations that may harm the health of our pet.

Among the products that we should avoid in addition to the dairy and protein already mentioned, a few vegetables and fruits should be mentioned. It is not recommended to give guinea pigs – because they can harm it in larger amounts, just like rhubarb or grapes. It is also not advisable to serve vegetables such as beans, peas, onions, potatoes, cabbage leaves or lettuce. Mushrooms should also be avoided. On the surface, it may seem that the guinea pig’s diet is similar to the rabbit’s preferences, but the food dedicated to rabbits contains protein and grains that should not be present in the guinea pig’s diet. Therefore, when shopping, you should limit yourself to products intended for guinea pigs.

As it turns out composing a menu for a guinea pig does not have to be that difficult. First of all, it should be remembered that the basis of the rodent’s diet must be hay, vegetables and fruits rich in vitamin C.
