What do guinea pigs eat?
Feeding the guinea pig. What food is most important to her?
Both short-haired and long-haired (e.g. rosettes) guinea pigs should receive hay first. This is the most important ingredient on which every guinea pig’s diet must be based. Piglets like hay very much, but they also need a constant amount of it to:
- grind the cheek teeth (molars and premolars, of which the pig has as many as 20),
- thanks to it, prevent molars from overgrowing,
- improve the functioning of the digestive processes (hay is a great source of fiber).
You should give pigs a lot of hay to eat. It is important, however, that it is of good quality. Hay must not be yellow or dry. The pig cannot eat dusty (dusty) hay as it could irritate the piglet’s nostrils. The hay cannot be warm to the touch either, as it may mean the beginning of its fermentation. So what kind of hay should you feed your piggy? Well, the best thing is fragrant and green. The hay can be supplemented with a special herbal mixture. Remember to add hay regularly. Unfortunately, stale and contaminated with faeces will be harmful to the pig.
Dry food for guinea pigs
Caring for the mumps also depends on its proper nutrition. You can enrich the feeding of a piglet with e.g. dry, high-quality feed. Unfortunately, a lot of research will have to be done, because many of the ready-made pig foods are simply food… unsuitable. The guinea pig shouldn’t eat grains, and most foods contain grains. So you need to find one that will have only a negligible content of grains. Sure, grains have a lot of protein, but it may be too much for a piggie. In addition, the husks of the grains often get between the teeth of animals.
So what is the best food to feed your piglet? Opt for food with a high vitamin C content that rodents cannot store in the body. They need it as much as we do. A good-quality dry food for food should contain a minimum of 10% fiber. Granulated feed will be the best, thanks to which the pig will not choose his favorite pieces and eat everything – while nourishing his body. The less artificial and colorful the food is, the more it can be taken into account when it comes to nourishing domestic coffee. What herbs do the guinea pig like the most?
In addition to hay, it is also worth giving your home caviar a variety of herbs. Rosette, Rex, Texel or other longhair pigs can eat herbs straight from the meadow, as well as dried ones. It is important, however, that the herbs are not wet or wilted – otherwise it may cause gas or diarrhea. Herbs are given to guinea Pig because they strengthen the heart and circulatory system, as well as improve metabolism. The herbs that enjoy guinea Pigs are:
- common thyme,
- red clover,
- common chamomile,
- lemon balm,
- black bar leaf,
- St. John’s wort
- hibiscus flower,
- raspberry and strawberry leaves,
- Jerusalem artichoke.

Feeding guinea pigs. Vegetables and fruits that guinea Pig can eat
The price of a guinea pig, its care and the right home are not all that is most important. The most important influence on the development and health of the guinea pig is its proper nutrition. Vegetables are a complementary element, so they should not be missing in the daily diet of guinea pigs. Those that contain a large amount of vitamin C will be especially valuable. What do guinea pigs eat?
- carrot – consists of approx. 90% of water, which is also necessary for pigs to live. Carrots improve digestion and do not cause gas.
- parsley – contains many valuable vitamins. Its root is rich in volatile oils that soothe cramps and gas.
beetroot – rich in folic acid, potassium and magnesium. It does not cause constipation or diarrhea. Demonstrates deacidifying properties.
cucumber – a rich source of minerals. Cucumber regulates digestive processes and blood pressure, and also prevents stone build-up in the kidneys. It is almost entirely water.

In addition to them, it is worth giving the pig greens, such as romaine lettuce, chicory, spinach and kale. Just watch out for too much spinach, which can acidify your body!
Eating pigs is also based on feeding them fruit. However, treat them as an additive because they contain a large amount of sugar. The fruits that pigs eagerly eat include:
- apple – contains approx. 85% water, and also has a diuretic effect. Most vitamin C is just under the skin, so it’s better to give the pig an unpeeled apple.
- strawberry – contains fiber, and has a strengthening and anti-diarrhea effect.
blueberry – contains a lot of vitamins, and also strengthens eyesight and lowers the level of undesirable cholesterol.
- watermelon – consists of 92% water, also has a diuretic effect and has a beneficial effect on the mucosa. It helps in the fight against neoplastic diseases.
- melon – consists of more than 90% water. It has a positive effect on the digestive system and has a slight laxative effect.
- banana – protects against heart disease, regulates blood pressure and is easily digestible by coffee.
You can give the pigs fruit, but try to do it in a much smaller amount than, for example, vegetables. Observe the mumps for any adverse allergic reactions or food problems. Very often vegetables and fruits are sprayed with chemicals – that is, insecticides and preservatives. It is therefore important to thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables before feeding them to pigs.
