Guinea Pig – what is worth knowing?

Types of guinea pigs – description of individual breeds

This rodent is native to South America. It was bred for consumption and ritual purposes, as well as for laboratory research. Today, in some regions of the worlds, the eating of guinea pigs is still practiced, but mostly they are bred for hobby and companionship.

Varieties of guinea pig are distinguished by the length of their hair. Guinea Pig can be:

  • short-haired – American (smoothhaired), Abyssinian (rosette), rex, teddy, amercian crested and english crested guinea pig.
  • long-haired – Peruvian (Peruvian) guinea pig, angora, sheltie and coronet have straight hair, and the curly hair has texel, alpaca, lunkarya and merino.
  • hairless – a hairless guinea pig is a skinny and a baldwin.

The smooth-haired guinea pig is the oldest breed. She can take care of her short fur on her own and you can teach her to take care of the litter box, which makes it easier to clean in the cage. Sheltie is her long-haired counterpart (her hair is pleasantly soft). The long-haired Peruvian guinea pig has straight and very thick hair that surrounds it completely. She has a rosette on her head and her bangs fall over her eyes. It has a characteristic part. Alpaca is her curly counterpart with equally soft hair.

Abyssinian guinea pig (rosette, Abissinian) is also popular, as it has at least 8 rosettes on its body (usually 4 on one side). It looks disheveled. Angora is similar, but has long hair, so its rosettes are not immediately visible. In turn, the guinea pig with no rosettes is texel. He has soft hair. Rex is its short-haired counterpart – it also doesn’t have any rosette, but its fur is stiff.

There are many colors of guinea pig. Guinea Pig can be single-color (monocolor), bicolor (bicolor) and tricolor (tricolor). Acceptable colors are: white, red, black, gold, cream, beige, saffron, stale blue, sable, buff. Different meanings are possible and certain colors have their own names. There are, among others agouti, himalaya, roan, dutch and dalmatian.

Teddy guinea pig – what is it like?

Teddy has short, rough fur. The ears of this guinea pig are slightly drooped and the head is rounded. It has a wide spacing of the front paws. Her eyes are similarly spaced. It looks like a teddy bear, which is why it owes its name. There are two varieties of the Teddy breed – CH and US. They only differ in the length of the fur. CH hair grows up to 6 cm, thick and curly around the belly. US has hair up to 2 cm. It is a breed similar to the rex.

Like all guinea pigs, the teddy breed is very playful and energetic. Before releasing it from the cage, it is worth fencing the selected part of the floor, because it may bite the cables or hide in some corner. He becomes attached to a person if he spends a lot of time with him. The guinea pig cage should not stand out of the way and be obscured, because the domestic coffee likes to observe the surroundings. It is active day and night. It is not a lively animal, but it is better to ensure that the cage is enclosed on all sides, including the top.

In addition to the cage (necessarily with a flat bottom), domestic coffee beans also need a sleeping house, a water bottle, a hay rack, a food bowl (quite heavy, otherwise the guinea pig can throw it and spread food over it), a flat bed and toys (it can be tunnels, bridges, balls or low swings). For this you need litter (preferably wooden granules that soak up urine well) and a litter box. If you are looking for more information, also check out this article on guinea pig farming.

Domestic coffee is a gregarious animal, so it does not tolerate loneliness. The best option is to buy two pigs from the same place at once. These animals get close to each other and the separation is stressful for them. They defend their territory, so it may take some time for them to accept a foreign individual from another farm into their herd.

Nutrition, care and diseases of guinea pigs

What should a Teddy guinea pig eat?

Guinea pigs are herbivores. Their daily diet should include dry food for guinea pigs, but also hay. It is worth diversifying your meals with vegetables (e.g. carrots, broccoli, beets, spinach, peppers, parsley, radishes), and occasionally also fruit (e.g. apples, bananas). Guinea Pig likes grass and herbs (e.g. basil, dill, dandelion).

The food for rabbits is insufficient for them and should not be fed. The guinea pig needs to get enough vitamin C that it cannot produce on its own. Its deficiency may cause some diseases.

It is important not to feed the guinea pig with beans as they are poisonous to them. It is also inadvisable to serve cabbage, onions and potatoes. Milk can cause diarrhea. However, it should be remembered that guinea Pig has constant access to fresh water in its drinker.

How to care for a guinea pig?

A hairless guinea pig needs weekly baths and rubbing with olive oil to prevent the skin from drying out. Guinea Pig, such as teddy, does not need to be brushed often, but you need to check if there are any parasites in its hair and if it is allergic. Long hair with straight hair must be combed with a soft brush, and curly hair must be gently combed with your fingers. You should also trim their claws regularly.

These animals usually live 6-8 years, sometimes a little longer. However, health problems begin when the guinea pig is around 5-6 years old. The teeth are the most common. Guinea Pig should grind it by itself by eating something hard, but sometimes it becomes too long and prevents them from eating. Bacteria and infections can cause your teeth to fall out. Timely diagnosis is essential, so that the disease can be cured and misfortune can be prevented.

The guinea pig can have skin problems. The cause may be stress, nutritional errors or too many herd. In addition, the following can happen to her: pasteurellosis, lichen lichen, tuberculosis, salmonellosis, and scabies. If you notice any disturbing symptoms (e.g. vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, avoiding contact with humans, shortness of breath, severe itching, weight loss), take your pet to the vet immediately. Individuals with an infectious disease should be separated from the rest of the herd.
