Varieties and breeding of domestic guinea pig – what is worth knowing?

What does a rex guinea pig look like?

The correct name of this rodent is guinea pig. Different varieties are not species but races. They can be divided into:

  • short-haired – Abyssinian guinea pig (Abyssinian, rosette), Rex, Amercian Crested, English Crested, Teddy, Smooth-haired (American).
  • longhair with straight hair – Peruvian guinea pig, coronet, sheltie, angora.
  • longhair with curly hair – alpaca guinea pig, texel, merino, lunkarya.
  • hairless – guinea pig baldwin, skinny.

The Rex guinea pig has a short, stiff coat and no rosettes. Its long-haired counterpart is texel, but this guinea pig has a soft fur.

The rosette (Abyssinian) guinea pig, as the name suggests, has rosettes on its body. There should be at least 8 of them, 4 on one side. Such a number of rosettes makes Abyssinian guinea pig look eternally disheveled. Angora is its long-haired counterpart, but due to its long hair, the rosettes of this guinea pig are not that conspicuous.

The smooth-haired guinea pig is the most popular guinea pig, and its long-haired counterpart is the sheltie. The Peruvian guinea pig (Peruvian guinea pig) has a parting, its fringe falls over its eyes, and there is a rosette on its head. Alpaca is its counterpart, but with curly hair.

Domestic guinea pig can be of various colors. Acceptable colors are: cream, gold, black, red, white, beige, saffron, buff, stale blue, sable. These rodents are both single-colored, bicolor and tricolor. There are also meanings that have received their own name, e.g. Himalayan pig, Dalmatian, Dutch, Agouti or Roan.

The long-haired straight-haired guinea pig requires regular combing with a soft brush, and for curly hair, only a gentle combing of the fingers. Guinea pigs without hair need to be bathed once a week and their skin is oiled with olive oil. Short-haired varieties usually take care of their fur by themselves, but they should be checked for parasites and skin allergies. What is the price of domestic guinea pig beans?

It all depends on where you buy it. Usually, a pet store sells guinea pigs in the range of PLN 20 – 100, of which the most expensive offers are rare. In breeding, it is a matter of PLN 100-300. Although breeding is a more expensive choice – and you have to drive a pet for a while, and not drive to the nearest stationary pet store – it is worth considering. When you buy a rodent from such a place, you get its pedigree, which allows you to participate in exhibitions.

In pet stores, it is common to accidentally breed closely related individuals, as they are all kept in one aquarium. In addition, rodents do not have an adequate diet, and their contact with humans is limited. Convincing a guinea pig like this can be difficult and sometimes even impossible.

You can find breeders’ announcements on advertising portals (zoomia.pl, olx.pl) and on the fanpage on Facebook. Although the photos attract attention, the final decision should be made only after visiting the kennel. First, check that the animals are caged clean, how many animals live in one place, and whether they are aggressive or appear sick.

Guinea pig feeding and cage equipment

What do guinea pigs eat?

They are herbivorous creatures. There are dry foods available on the market specifically for guinea pigs and you can feed them, but they also need fresh hay. They also eat grass and herbs (including basil, dill). Their diet can be varied with vegetables (e.g. carrots, broccoli, beets, peppers, parsley, spinach, radishes). Occasionally it is worth giving fruit, e.g. bananas, apples.

The guinea pig needs to grind its teeth on something (this usually happens when eating hard things like vegetables). If she is unable to do so, her teeth will grow to such an extent that she cannot eat. Infections and bacteria can cause your teeth to fall out, so you should check back regularly to make sure everything is okay.

It is extremely important not to serve domestic beans as they are poisonous to them. Cabbage, potatoes, milk and onions also harm it. Guinea pig food should contain vitamin C, so check the ingredients before purchasing food. For this reason, rabbit food is not good for guinea pig – it contains too little vitamin C. Its deficiency can cause various diseases, and the rodent’s body does not produce it itself, so you need to ensure that the guinea pig consumes it in its food.

Rex guinea pig – what accessories are necessary?

The guinea pig cage should be large enough. Its minimum dimensions are 80×60 cm for one specimen, and 100×60 cm for two. It is not a lively creature, so you can give up any shelves or platforms (unless low). The floor of the cage must be smooth. It is worth teaching guinea pig to deal with the litter box from the very beginning, because it makes cleaning easier.

The cage should also include: a bowl (quite heavy), a water bottle and a hay feeder. A reel is not a good idea, but all tunnels and bridges are. The guinea pig also likes ball or roller toys. The necessary equipment for the cage is a large house in which the guinea pig can be hidden. Additionally, you can consider a hammock, lair (e.g. in the shape of a sofa) or a low swing.

The guinea pig of the rex breed requires the same interest as the other varieties. Domestic guinea pig is a herd animal, so it feels best in someone’s company. If you know that you will not always be able to devote enough time to her, buy two specimens from the same place right away. Guinea pigs get close to each other and have a problem with the tolerance of the new individual in their territory. These rodents should not live only in a cage – they should be released onto a separate piece of the floor, and all cables should be removed from their path.
