Not everyone knows, but the correct name for this rodent is guinea pig. It comes from South America. In those regions, guinea pig is grown for consumption and laboratory purposes, and not for companionship (as a hobby). Guinea pig breeds can be divided into several groups. It is mainly about the length of the coat (or lack thereof) and the structure of the hair.

Guinea Pig can be:

  • long-haired – Peruvian (Peruvian) guinea pig, coronet, angora, as well as sheltie guinea pig have long and straight hair. Curly hair has texel, lunkarya, merino and alpaca.
  • short-haired – Abyssinian guinea pig (Abyssinian, rosette), Rex, Teddy, Amercian Crested, English Crested and American (smooth-haired).
  • hairless – skinny guinea pig and baldwin.

There is no race that would be called the so-called thumbnail. As a rule, guinea pigs are small. The oldest of the breeds mentioned above is the smooth-haired guinea pig, and its long-haired counterpart is the sheltie. The Peruvian woman has a rosette on her head and a characteristic parting, her bangs fall over her eyes, and her hair is very thick. Abyssinian guinea pig has at least 8 rosettes and looks disheveled. The amusement of rosettes is texel (has soft hair) and rex (has stiff fur).

Domestic guinea pig has different colors. There are single-color, bicolor and tri-color pigs. Acceptable colors are: white, gold, black, red, cream, sable, saffron, beige, stale blue, buff. Guinea Pig can also be meaningful, and some of the colors have their own names, incl. dutch, himalaya, roan, dalmatian or agouti.

Nutrition, care – caring for a guinea pig

Guinea Pig is a herbivorous creature. You can feed her with guinea pig food, but she also needs hay. Guinea Pig eats vegetables such as carrots, peppers, radishes, broccoli, beets, spinach, and parsley. From time to time, you can give its fruit such as bananas, apples. This rodent likes grass and herbs, among others dill, basil.

This pet needs an adequate amount of vitamin C to avoid some diseases resulting from its deficiency. For this reason, rabbit food is insufficient and should not be fed to the guinea pig. The beans are poisonous to the caviar, but you also cannot give them potatoes, onions, cabbage and milk. Typically, these animals live 6-8 years, but health problems begin around 5-6 years of age and the most common are dental problems. The guinea pig should rub them by itself (by eating something hard). If it doesn’t, your teeth will grow in size and prevent it from being eaten, and various bacteria and infections can cause your teeth to fall out. Regularly check that the teeth of the house guinea pig are okay. If you’re looking for more inspiration, check out too articles about long-haired guinea pigs collected here.

The hairless guinea pig should be bathed once a week and rub the skin with olive oil so that the guinea pig does not have dry skin. What else is worth knowing about guinea pigs?

Breeding and a pet store – the price of a guinea pig

Domestic guinea pig is a herd animal, so it’s best to buy two specimens at once. It is worth buying them at the same time from the same place, because these rodents get close to each other, and later introducing a new member of the herd can be problematic. A guinea pig on its territory may not tolerate a new arrival.

The price of a guinea pig depends on where the little animal is bought. In a pet store, you can buy it usually in the range of PLN 20-80, sometimes a little more (PLN 100). In breeding, it is a matter of around PLN 100-300, but usually around PLN 200. While farming is a slightly more expensive option, it is a better option. Such guinea pigs have pedigrees and can participate in shows. The buyer can also be sure that the animals are healthy and have not been bred by accident.

Ads can be found on Facebook (fanpage of the breeding farm) and on various advertising portals (e.g. Once you have the desired animal (or several animals), it is worth visiting the farm and looking at the conditions in which rodents live before making the final decision. They should be clean and the drinker should not be short of water. They must be healthy and there must not be too many individuals in the cages. They should not show aggression either towards themselves or towards people.

What accessories should a longhaired guinea pig have?

The guinea pig cage should not be too small. For one specimen, the cage should be at least 80×60 cm, and for two it is at least 100×60 cm. The substrate must be necessarily smooth so that the tiny paws of the cavia do not fall into the holes between the bars. Put the litter in the litter box (if the guinea pig can handle it) in the form of wooden granules or bedding. The food bowl should be relatively heavy (so that the guinea pig does not throw it), and the drinker and hay rack should be hung on the bars of the cage. It is not a lively animal, so no platforms or shelves are needed.

However, a hammock for guinea pigs works well. Such a suspended lair can become a favorite place of a rodent, just like, for example, low swings. In turn, the house will allow the guinea pig to hide when it does not want to be in view. A reel is not the best idea, but the guinea pig likes tunnels and bridges as well as roller toys or balls. The guinea pig should not venture onto an exposed area of the floor. The run must be separated, otherwise the rodent may bite the cables or hide under the sofa.

The long-haired, short-haired guinea pig, as well as the one without hair, does not tolerate loneliness. If you know that you will not be able to spend a lot of time on her, and she will be locked in a cage most of the time, consider choosing two individuals at once. But remember that even when guinea pigs have company, they need constant care and attention.
