Characteristics of domestic coffee – species or breeds?

Varieties of guinea pigs

The types of domestic coffee beans are not species, but breeds. There are no thumbnails. Although sometimes the guinea pig is large by its standards, it is still not a huge animal that can still be distinguished as miniatures. The following varieties are distinguished:

  • short-haired – smoothhaired guinea pig, Abyssinian (rosette, abyssinian), amercian crested, english crested, rex, teddy.
  • longhair – Peruvian guinea pig (colloquial term for Peruvian guinea pig), sheltie and coronet have straight hair, and curly hair has texel, alpaca, lunkarya and merino.
  • hairless – skinny guinea pig and baldwin.

The most popular and oldest is the American smoothhaired guinea pig. It comes from South America, where it is further bred for consumption. It is not customary in Europe to eat a guinea pig. The smooth-haired ones are bred as a hobby and for companionship. Their hair is smooth, dense and short. This is the only domestic coffee variety that has such a name, so it is not synonymous with short-haired ones (other breeds are also short-haired). This guinea Pig is clean and takes care of its fur on its own. It is therefore easy to care for. In addition, you can teach her to take care of herself in the litter box, which also makes cleaning easier.

Long-haired guinea pigs can have hair up to 15 cm. A Peruvian pig has a thick coat that surrounds the entire body of the pet. This breed is characterized by a parting, a rosette on the head and a fringe that falls over the eyes. Sheltie is the equivalent of a smooth-haired guinea pig. Her hair is soft and uniformly long. Texel, on the other hand, is the long-haired equivalent of the rex guinea pig – it also has no rosette, but the hair is soft (the rex is short and stiff).

Domestic coffee has many possible colors. It can be one-color (monocolor), two-color (bicolor) and tricolor (tricolor). The colors are: white, gold, red, black, beige, cream, saffron, sable, stale blue, buff. It could matter. Interesting colors are e.g. agouti, roan, himalaya, dutch and dalmatian.

Rosette or Angora?

The Abyssinian guinea pig is called a rosette because of the specific hair pattern. It is stiff and rough, which makes the coffee look disheveled. There are at least eight rosettes on her body. Angora is its long-haired counterpart. It also has eight rosettes (4 on one side), but you may not notice it at first glance through long hair.

These rodents are friendly towards people. If a lot of time is spent with them, they become attached to the owner. The cage should stand in a place where the coffee house will be able to observe the surroundings and people. As a run, it is better not to use the floor, but some fenced part. Otherwise, the guinea pig might hide in the corner and gnaw at the cables. It is active both during the day and at night.

However, you have to bear in mind that it is a gregarious animal and needs a companion. For this reason, it is best to purchase two guinea pigs. It’s even better if they were from the same place, because these animals get close to each other and endure breakups badly. They treat alien individuals with reserve, they can also be aggressive, they want to defend their territory. Also check this article about choosing a nest for your guinea pig.

Nutrition, care and diseases of guinea pigs

Abyssinian guinea pig – what should guinea Pig be eaten?

It is a herbivorous animal. Guinea Pig should receive dry guinea pig food and hay daily. It is also worth giving her vegetables (e.g. broccoli, carrots, parsley, beets, spinach, radishes, peppers), and only occasionally fruit (e.g. apples, watermelons, bananas). The guinea pig also likes grass and herbs (such as basil and dill).

Beans in particular should be avoided as they are poisonous to the guinea pig. Cabbage and onions are also inadvisable. Potatoes also should not be served, as well as milk. However, she should have access to fresh water at all times.

Guinea Pig should not eat rabbit food. First of all, it doesn’t have enough of the vitamins that the guinea pig needs. It is mainly vitamin C, which the body does not produce, and its deficiency can cause various diseases.

Diseases and care of guinea pigs

Guinea pigs live 6-8 years. There are individuals that are older, but this happens sporadically. The record for life expectancy in guinea pigs is 14 years and 10 months. However, you have to be prepared for the fact that health problems may appear at the age of 5-6.

Hairless guinea pigs need weekly baths and rubbing with olive oil to keep their skin from drying out. Guinea Pig, whose hair is smooth and short, basically only needs to be checked for parasites and skin allergies. The hair of long-haired curly guinea pigs should be combed with your fingers (and possibly with a brush or a comb), and the straight hair should be gently combed with a soft brush. You should also remember to trim the claws regularly.

Every now and then you need to make sure that the guinea pig has rubbed its teeth. Otherwise, it may have a problem with eating, which will result in starvation and death of the rodent. If you find that the teeth are too long, don’t try to file them yourself. For this you need to go to the vet. Unfortunately, guinea pigs often have dental problems. Sometimes bacteria build up there and infections can lead to tooth loss. Timely diagnosis of the disease can prevent this.

Guinea pigs can meet: salmonellosis, lichen, scabies, tuberculosis and pasteurellosis. Finger pad inflammation occurs (due to contamination in the cage, improper substrate, lack of exercise and obesity). Stress, an overly large herd or nutritional mistakes can lead to skin problems. Symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, cough, weight loss, shortness of breath, severe itching, fine spots on the skin, dull hair, hair loss, depression or avoiding contact with humans should not be underestimated. You should take the guinea pig to the vet right away. In the case of an infectious disease, it is worth examining the rest of the herd and separating the healthy from the sick.

Breeding or zoo – how much does an Abyssinian guinea pig cost?

The price of a guinea pig usually does not depend on its variety, but on the place where it is bought. In a pet store, it will be a matter of PLN 20-80. In a registered breeding farm, it is 100-300 PLN, although usually it is 150-200 PLN. You can choose a pet based on a photo, but before making the final decision, it is worth visiting the place and assessing the conditions there. Pay attention to this:

  • Are the animals healthy?
  • Are there too many individuals in the cage?

  • Are they aggressive towards people or other animals?

  • Do they have food and water?

Choosing a farm is the safer option. All the animals there have a pedigree and can take part in exhibitions. They are tested and cared for, which can be seen during a visit to the breeding farm. The photos do not reflect the atmosphere on the spot, which is why the meeting is so important.

Before buying a guinea pig, you also need to stock up on the necessary accessories for it. You will need: a cage with a flat bottom (no bars), a sleeping house, a food bowl (heavy enough so that the guinea pig cannot throw it), a water bottle, a hay rack, a flat bed, toys (tunnels, low swings, bridges, balls, rollers). You also need litter (wooden granules work well) and a litter box.
